Balcony Railing Installation in Michigan: Safety Codes, Styles, and What It Costs
A balcony railing has two jobs: keep people safe, and look good doing it. At HotFab Welding in Warren, Michigan, we fabricate and install balcony railings for homes and commercial buildings throughout Metro Detroit. Here is what every property owner should know before starting this project.
Michigan's Residential Building Code requires balcony railings on any elevated surface more than 30 inches above the floor or grade. The minimum height is 36 inches for residential railings and 42 inches for commercial buildings. Balusters — the vertical members between top and bottom rails — must be spaced no more than 4 inches apart to prevent a child's head from passing through.
Popular balcony railing styles we fabricate include traditional picket-style steel railings, modern horizontal flat bar designs, cable railings with steel posts and stainless cable infill, glass panel railings with steel frames, and ornamental designs with custom scrollwork or geometric patterns. Each style has different structural requirements and material costs.
For outdoor Michigan balconies, we always recommend either aluminum or stainless steel for the primary railing components due to their superior resistance to freeze-thaw cycling and road salt exposure. Carbon steel is an excellent option if properly coated with a high-quality powder coat finish and maintained periodically.
Installation includes measuring the balcony perimeter, fabricating the railing sections at our Warren shop, delivering to your location, and mounting the posts into the balcony structure using through-bolts or surface-mount base plates. Most residential balcony railings are installed in a single day. Call (248) 259-9956 or visit hotfabwelding.com/contact for a free quote.
