Glass and Steel Railing Systems in Michigan: Modern Design Meets Metal Fabrication
Glass railing systems have become one of the most requested design elements in Michigan residential renovations, new construction, and commercial spaces. The appeal is obvious: the unobstructed view, the modern aesthetic, and the way glass panels make a space feel larger and more open. At HotFab Welding in Warren, Michigan, we fabricate the steel and stainless steel frameworks that make glass railing systems structurally sound, code-compliant, and beautiful.
A glass railing is not just glass panels leaning against each other — it is a precision steel system engineered to hold the glass securely under load, including lateral force from people leaning against it. The steel or stainless steel posts, base shoes, top rails, and hardware must be sized, spaced, and installed correctly to carry the required loads per Michigan building code.
We fabricate glass railing systems in two primary configurations. The first is a post-and-top-rail system, where steel or stainless posts are mounted at regular intervals (typically 36 to 48 inches on center) and a continuous top rail spans between them. Tempered glass panels are set into base shoes or clamped to the posts. The second configuration is a frameless base shoe system, where structural channels are mounted directly to the floor or stair stringer and the glass is clamped in the shoe with no visible posts, creating the fully frameless look.
Glass used in railing systems must be tempered or laminated safety glass, typically 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick. We coordinate glass procurement with local glass suppliers in Metro Detroit and ensure the glass dimensions and edge work are compatible with the steel framework we fabricate.
