How to Maintain Metal Railings in Michigan's Harsh Weather

Michigan's climate puts metal railings through extreme stress. Freeze-thaw cycles, road salt spray, snow accumulation, and months of moisture exposure can degrade even professionally fabricated metalwork if it is not properly maintained. At HotFab Welding, we build railings to last — and with the right care, they will look excellent for 20 to 30 years or more.

Steel railings are the most maintenance-intensive. The key is keeping the paint or powder coat finish intact. Inspect your steel railings each spring after the snow melts. Look for chips, bubbles, scratches, or rust spots — especially at the base of posts where water pools. Any bare metal should be treated with a rust converter, primed, and touch-painted before the rust spreads. A full repaint every 7 to 10 years is reasonable for exterior steel railings in Michigan.

Stainless steel railings require far less maintenance. However, they are not completely maintenance-free. Road salt and environmental chlorides can cause surface staining and, in extreme cases, pitting on lower-grade stainless. Clean stainless railings with a mild soap and water solution twice per year, always wiping in the direction of the grain. Avoid steel wool or abrasive pads that can scratch the surface and trap iron particles.

Aluminum railings are the lowest maintenance of the three. Aluminum forms a natural oxide layer that protects it from further corrosion. Occasional cleaning with soap and water is all that is needed. Painted or powder-coated aluminum should be inspected for chips annually and touched up as needed.

Regardless of material, check all connection points, post bases, and fasteners each year. Loose posts should be re-secured promptly — a wobbly railing is a safety hazard and puts stress on adjacent welds. If you notice significant corrosion, cracking, or structural looseness, call HotFab Welding at (248) 259-9956 for an inspection and repair quote.
