ADA-Compliant Metal Handrails in Michigan: What the Code Requires

If your Michigan commercial building, public facility, or multi-family property has stairs, ramps, or elevated walkways accessible to the public, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) handrail requirements apply. Non-compliant handrails are not just a code violation — they are a liability and a barrier to accessibility. HotFab Welding in Warren, Michigan fabricates ADA-compliant metal handrails for commercial and institutional clients throughout Metro Detroit.

The key ADA requirements for handrails include: handrail height between 34 and 38 inches measured vertically from the stair nosing or ramp surface; a graspable cross-section where the outside diameter is between 1.25 and 2 inches for round sections, or an equivalent graspable profile for non-round handrails; handrails must extend horizontally at least 12 inches beyond the top riser and slope down for one tread depth beyond the bottom riser on stairs; and handrail ends must return to the wall or post to prevent clothing from catching.

Round steel pipe handrails in Schedule 40 standard (1.5-inch nominal diameter gives an OD of approximately 1.9 inches) are the most common ADA-compliant configuration we fabricate. Rectangular tube and flat bar profiles can also be ADA-compliant if the graspable dimension meets the 1.25 to 2-inch requirement.

We also fabricate graspable extensions, wall returns, and post-mounted configurations to meet the full letter of ADA requirements. For ramp handrails, we ensure both sides of the ramp are provided with continuous handrails where required and that the gripping surface is uninterrupted for the full ramp length.
