Powder Coating vs. Paint for Metal Fabrication: Which Finish Lasts Longer in Michigan?
One of the most common questions we answer after a fabrication project is approved: should we powder coat it or paint it? Both options protect metal from corrosion and allow for color customization, but they differ significantly in durability, cost, and appearance. Here is a detailed comparison to help Michigan homeowners and businesses make the right choice for their project.
Powder coating is an electrostatic process where dry pigment powder is sprayed onto a grounded metal surface and then cured in an oven at around 400°F. The heat causes the powder to melt and flow into a smooth, hard film that bonds directly to the metal. The result is a finish that is two to four times thicker than conventional paint, highly resistant to chipping, scratching, and fading, and extremely durable in outdoor conditions. Powder coating is our default recommendation for exterior railings, gates, fences, and any metalwork that will face Michigan winters.
Liquid paint — whether brush-applied, spray-applied, or roll-applied — offers greater flexibility in color matching, application in the field (powder coating requires a shop and oven), and cost for simple jobs. High-quality two-part epoxy and urethane paints applied over a properly primed surface can also perform excellently for many years. Paint is the right choice for large structural components that cannot fit in a powder coat oven, field touch-ups after installation, and projects where an exact color match to existing elements is critical.
For Michigan's climate specifically, powder coating outperforms liquid paint for outdoor applications. The freeze-thaw cycling, road salt, and humidity that Metro Detroit metal is exposed to every year will penetrate a paint film's micro-cracks much faster than a properly cured powder coat. Powder-coated railings and gates we installed years ago still look excellent today.
HotFab Welding coordinates with local powder coating partners in the Warren area for standard colors and finishes. Custom colors and special finishes are available with slightly longer lead times.
