Steel Mezzanine Platform Fabrication in Michigan: Add Space Without Moving
Warehouse space in Metro Detroit is expensive. Rather than relocating to a larger facility, many Michigan businesses are adding structural steel mezzanine platforms to their existing buildings — effectively doubling usable floor space at a fraction of the cost of new construction. HotFab Welding in Warren, Michigan designs and fabricates custom steel mezzanine platforms for warehouses, manufacturing facilities, auto dealerships, and commercial spaces throughout Michigan.
A mezzanine platform is a raised steel structure built within an existing building's clear height. It consists of steel columns, primary beams, secondary framing, and a deck surface (typically steel grating or concrete-filled metal decking). The platform is accessed by a steel staircase and includes perimeter safety railing. Depending on its intended use — storage, office space, production area, or observation deck — the design loads and structural specifications vary.
The design process for a mezzanine starts with a site visit to measure the building dimensions, assess the floor slab load capacity, identify overhead obstructions (sprinklers, HVAC ductwork, overhead cranes), and understand how the space will be used. We produce a fabrication layout drawing and work with a structural engineer when required by the local building department to produce stamped engineering drawings for the permit.
Fabrication is done at our Warren shop. Columns, beams, and stair stringers are cut, drilled, and welded to the approved drawings. Components are delivered and assembled on-site typically within one to two weeks from fabrication completion, depending on platform size. Most mezzanines of 1,000 to 3,000 square feet can be installed in two to four days with our installation crew.
If you are out of floor space and cannot afford to move, a steel mezzanine platform may be the most cost-effective expansion option available. Call HotFab Welding at (248) 259-9956 to discuss your building dimensions and space needs.
