Aluminum is the lightest structural metal we work with. It does not rust, is easy to cut and shape, and holds up around decks, pools, and anywhere Michigan road salt and moisture would attack bare steel. When aluminum is the right choice
Residential deck, balcony, and porch railings; backyard and pool fencing; driveway and pedestrian gates where weight matters for hinges and openers; light commercial railings; window guards and decorative panels; and trailer components on livestock, cargo, and refrigeration units. Aluminum is not as strong as steel under heavy loads, so for structural and high-security work we will usually recommend steel instead — and tell you why.
TIG vs. MIG for aluminum
TIG welding gives an exceptionally clean, precise bead with minimal spatter, which is why we use it for visible joints and thin-walled aluminum where burn-through is a risk. MIG is faster and stronger for fabrication runs such as fence panels and gate frames. Many jobs use both: MIG for the frame, TIG on the joints you will see.
Finish and maintenance

Is aluminum or steel better for a deck railing in Michigan?
For most residential decks and balconies aluminum is the better choice: it will not rust, is lighter, and needs almost no maintenance. Steel is stronger and better for structural or high-security applications, and it must be powder coated to survive Michigan winters.
Can you weld aluminum on site?
Yes. Our mobile unit carries aluminum filler and equipment, so trailer components, railings, and gate repairs can be welded at your location.
Do you TIG weld aluminum?
Yes. We use TIG for visible joints, thin-walled aluminum, and anywhere appearance matters, and MIG for faster fabrication of frames and panels.
Does aluminum need to be painted?
No. Aluminum does not rust, so it can be left with a mill finish. Powder coating is optional if you want a specific color or a more finished look.
